Abstract

This research aims to comprehensively understand the methods of continuous assessment (C. A.) employed in N.C.E. (Nigeria Certificate in Education) Social Studies courses, as perceived by students at Federal College of Education, Yola. Specifically the research includes exploring student perspectives on effectiveness and fairness, investigating preferred continuous assessment methods,
and assessing the effect on student learning. The study involved purposive sampling technique, using quantitative data from questionnaires. Findings indicate a preference for writing tests over assignments, highlighting benefits in recall and depth of understanding, while suggesting the need to enhance writing test effectiveness for critical thinking and personal expression. Recommendation emphasized improving writing assignment designs to cater to diverse student needs.
