Abstract

The farmers-herders conflict has emerged as one of the most significant threats to national security and socio-economic development in Nigeria's Middle Belt. Although farmers and pastoralists historically maintained mutually beneficial economic relationships, growing competition over land, grazing routes, and water resources has transformed these interactions into violent confrontations. This study examines the causes, patterns, effects, and possible solutions to the conflict, focusing on Benue, Plateau, and Southern Kaduna States. The study adopts a qualitative descriptive approach, drawing on primary data from key informant interviews with community leaders, traditional rulers, and internally displaced persons (IDPs), as well as secondary data from scholarly publications and reports by organizations such as the International Crisis Group and Amnesty International. Guided by Social Disorganization Theory and Social Conflict Theory, the study argues that the crisis extends beyond resource competition and has evolved into a complex security challenge shaped by environmental pressures, criminality, ethnic and religious tensions, and weak governance. Findings identify climate change, desertification, southward migration of pastoralists, proliferation of small arms, poor conflict management, and land grabbing as major drivers of the conflict. The violence has resulted in widespread loss of lives, destruction of property, mass displacement, and deepening ethnic and religious mistrust, thereby undermining national cohesion and internal stability. The study recommends improved security measures, transparent land policies, sustainable ranching systems, climate adaptation strategies, community dialogue initiatives, equitable justice delivery, and decisive action against perpetrators of violence.
