Abstract

Women have played important roles in society, from the precolonial to the colonial and the modern times. When discussing the role of women in Nigerian society, caution needs to be taken so as not to fall victim to gender-based violence (GBV). This paper looked at the
traditional roles and qualities of women; also highlighted are some roles of women in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. Jesus never discriminated against women, though there are a few with bad characters/behaviours; yet the majority were good. The researchers used a qualitative research design as their methodology. The work discovered, among other things, that in the Nigerian contemporary society, women have made significant impacts, especially in administration, politics, health care, education, judiciary, etc. They served as role models worth emulation, though, and very few have portrayed them in bad light. The work recommended, among other things, that our women should be trained so that they will maximise their potentials in our contemporary society.
